Casino recorded 10,930 residents at the 2021 Census (ABS Suburbs and Localities figure), making it the largest town in the Richmond Valley local government area. Saleyards have operated here since 1916, and the modern Northern Rivers Livestock Exchange regularly handles well over 100,000 head of cattle a year, with sales worth well over $200 million in strong years. The town leans into the title with an annual Beef Week celebration.
Casino grew up as a rail and river-adjacent service centre for the surrounding grazing and dairy country — early infrastructure included waterworks in 1906 and gas street lighting in 1917 — and it remains the commercial hub for a wide stretch of inland Bundjalung Country along the Richmond River, well inland of the coastal towns most visitors know.
