Between two national parks

Evans Head

Evans Head is a working fishing village squeezed between Broadwater National Park and Bundjalung National Park — the park that shares this website's name.

About Evans Head

Evans Head recorded 2,907 residents at the 2021 Census. The Evans Head Fishermen's Co-Op still sells ocean-fresh seafood by the marina, and locals here were among the pioneers of Australia's prawn trawling industry. Just north of town, Bundjalung National Park runs the coast from Iluka to Evans Head across 21,000 hectares of wetlands, coastal heath, and rainforest; Broadwater National Park sits to the south, with the Razorback Lookout giving views over both the park and the Evans River.

The town also has a distinct aviation history: an airfield opened here in 1936, was taken over by the Commonwealth in 1937, and became home to the RAAF's No. 1 Bombing and Gunnery School under the wartime Empire Air Training Scheme, fully operational by December 1941 — a memorial aerodrome still marks that history today.

Evans Head is Bundjalung Country. For matters of language, cultural protocol, or country and family connections, local Bundjalung organisations and native title bodies are the right contact — not this website.
