Grafton is a wide-streeted river city on the Clarence, famous every October–November for jacaranda blossom, and one of the southernmost towns commonly associated with Bundjalung Country.
About Grafton
Grafton and South Grafton, either side of the Clarence River, recorded around 17,150 residents at the 2021 Census (ABS Urban Centre and Locality figure). The city's jacaranda trees were first planted as a beautification project in the 1880s, and the resulting Jacaranda Festival — running since the mid-1930s — is generally recognised as Australia's oldest floral festival, drawing visitors for its parade, art competitions, and streets of purple blossom each spring.
Grafton is one of the more southerly towns people associate with Bundjalung Country, close to the boundary described by Bundjalung sources as running near the lower Clarence River. This is also close to Yaegl Country, whose people are the traditional custodians of parts of the lower Clarence around Maclean, Yamba, and Iluka.
