Clarence River mouth

Iluka

Iluka faces Yamba across the Clarence River mouth, and sits at the southern end of the national park that shares this website's name.

About Iluka

Iluka recorded 1,764 residents at the 2021 Census, a quiet fishing and holiday village 77km north of Grafton. Bundjalung National Park begins at Iluka's northern edge and runs 21,000 hectares up the coast to Evans Head, taking in wetlands, coastal heath, and rainforest. Iluka Nature Reserve, right by the town, protects the largest remaining stand of littoral (by-the-sea) rainforest in New South Wales and is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area — over 180 plant species in a strip of forest that once ran almost unbroken along this coastline.

Iluka sits close to the southern edge of Bundjalung Country and within the Country of the Yaegl People, recognised native title holders of the lower Clarence River area since 2015 (land) and 2017 (sea country). This page doesn't try to draw an exact boundary between Bundjalung and Yaegl Country; the Yaegl Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC is the registered body for Yaegl native title matters.

Yaegl Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC: listed on the National Native Title Register.
