Gateway to the rainforests

Kyogle

Kyogle sits at the headwaters of the Richmond River, hard against the World Heritage-listed Border Ranges, and calls itself — fairly — the gateway to the rainforests.

About Kyogle

The town of Kyogle recorded around 2,800 residents at the 2021 Census, the hub for a much larger, sparsely populated council area stretching to the Queensland border. Kyogle is the touring hub for the Rainforest Way driving routes and sits next to Border Ranges National Park, part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area and home to one of the densest koala populations in the state.

The town is also a rail history landmark: just north of Kyogle, the Border Loop is a spiral of track engineered to lift the old Sydney–Brisbane railway line up through the Border Ranges, a feat still visited by rail enthusiasts. The sealed Lions Road out to Beaudesert, opened in 1971 as a joint project between the Kyogle and Beaudesert Lions Clubs, is another of the area's scenic drives.

Kyogle is Bundjalung Country, inland from the coastal towns most visitors know. For matters of language, cultural protocol, or country and family connections, local Bundjalung organisations and native title bodies are the right contact — not this website.
