About Mullumbimby
Mullumbimby recorded around 3,600–4,200 residents at the 2021 Census depending on the exact boundary used (3,740 in the State Suburb locality), twenty minutes inland from Byron Bay along the Brunswick River valley. Its heritage-listed main street still carries the shopfronts from its early-1900s heyday as a dairy, banana, and sugar cane centre, and the town's old hydro-electric power station complex has state heritage listing of its own. These days small-crop and boutique horticulture has mostly replaced cane and dairy on the surrounding flats.
Mullumbimby has a strong reputation for live music — pubs like the Middle Pub have long hosted informal Sunday sessions — alongside markets, galleries, and a community that grew significantly through the alternative-lifestyle movement of the 1970s and after.
