About Murwillumbah
Murwillumbah recorded around 9,800–10,000 residents at the 2021 Census (10,031 in the Urban Centre and Locality). The town's main cultural drawcard is the Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre, an award-winning facility looking straight out at Wollumbin, which relocated to its current site in 2004 and added a purpose-built wing in 2014 recreating parts of the late painter Margaret Olley's Sydney studio. Murwillumbah's old railway corridor — once the branch line down from the Border Loop at Kyogle — has been repurposed as the Tweed section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, a shared cycling and walking route through the Tweed Valley's cane and caldera country.
The town looks directly up at Wollumbin (Mount Warning), the volcanic plug that is the spiritual and geographic heart of the wider caldera country and deeply sacred to Bundjalung people. Murwillumbah is Bundjalung Country; for matters of language, cultural protocol, or country and family connections, local bodies such as the Tweed Byron Local Aboriginal Land Council and traditional custodian groups are the right contact — not this website.
