Nimbin was a quiet dairy village until a ten-day festival in 1973 changed its course permanently — it's been known as a centre of Australian counterculture ever since.
About Nimbin
Nimbin recorded 1,607 residents at the 2021 Census. In May 1973 the Australian Union of Students brought the Aquarius Festival to town — ten days of music, art, and alternative-lifestyle culture, co-directed by Johnny Allen and Graeme Dunstan, often described as Australia's answer to Woodstock. Many festival-goers stayed on or returned, and the resulting wave of intentional communities and back-to-the-land settlement through the surrounding hills reshaped the district. Nimbin's HEMP Embassy and the annual MardiGrass festival each May continue that thread as a hub for cannabis law reform activism.
Nimbin is Bundjalung Country, inland from Lismore in the Northern Rivers hinterland. The nearby Nimbin Rocks, rhyolite outcrops left by the ancient Tweed volcano, are a highly significant Bundjalung cultural site — the NSW Government’s visitor advice is viewing from the road only. For matters of language, cultural protocol, or country and family connections, local bodies such as the Ngulingah Local Aboriginal Land Council and traditional custodian groups are the right contact — not this website.
