About Nimbin
Nimbin recorded 1,607 residents at the 2021 Census. In May 1973 the Australian Union of Students brought the Aquarius Festival to town — ten days of music, art, and alternative-lifestyle culture, co-directed by Johnny Allen and Graeme Dunstan, often described as Australia's answer to Woodstock. Many festival-goers stayed on or returned, and the resulting wave of intentional communities and back-to-the-land settlement through the surrounding hills reshaped the district. Nimbin's HEMP Embassy and the annual Mardi Grass festival each May continue that thread as a hub for cannabis law reform activism.
