Tweed River mouth

Tweed Heads

Tweed Heads sits on the NSW side of the Tweed River mouth, right on the Queensland border. It's the largest population centre in Bundjalung Country and a natural hub for community email and web hosting requests from across the Tweed.

About Tweed Heads

Tweed Heads, Tweed Heads South, Tweed Heads West, and Banora Point form one continuous urban area with Coolangatta and Kirra just across the border in Queensland — most people driving through barely notice the state line. At the 2021 Census, the New South Wales side of that connected urban area (the ABS's "Tweed Heads part" of the Gold Coast–Tweed Heads urban centre) recorded around 63,700 residents, making it comfortably the biggest town anywhere in Bundjalung Country, ahead of Lismore and Ballina.

The border itself is marked at Point Danger, a headland lighthouse jointly built by Tweed Shire and Gold Coast City councils in 1971 as a Captain Cook bicentenary memorial — it's cast partly from iron salvaged from the Endeavour and was, for a time, used to trial laser lighting technology. Inland, the town looks out toward Wollumbin (Mount Warning) and the caldera country that shapes so much of the Tweed.

This part of the Tweed River is Bundjalung Country, and specifically the country of Bundjalung-speaking clans of the lower Tweed. Tweed Heads is not a land council, native title body, or cultural authority — for matters of language, cultural protocol, or family and country connections, the appropriate contacts are local Bundjalung organisations and the native title bodies covering the Tweed.
